We know that to lose weight and become healthier, we are supposed to eat right and exercise. What some people don’t know is how to get started. With the plethora of fad diets and healthy eating tips available, where should we begin? A good place to begin is with nutrient dense foods.

There are some foods that have been defined as superfoods. The term refers to foods rich in phytonutrients. They are compounds found in fruits and vegetables that become active when released into the body. Broccoli, blueberries, garlic and tomatoes all fit into this category of foods. Most natural foods we eat are treated with chemicals, such as herbicides and pesticides. Some common household cleaners also have these chemicals. The affect they have on our bodies has many characteristics. One of which is an increase in fat and more fat all over your body means more fat on your belly. The chemicals, called xenoestrogens stimulate hormones that cause our bodies to hold on to this fat, making it more difficult to lose. In addition to the superfoods listed, cruciferous vegetables as well as different types of teas and spices also have high levels of phytonutrients that can help our bodies counteract the effect of xenoestrogens. Eating more broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage can actually help you lose stomach fat in an indirect way.

There are two types of fat that we carry in our abdominal area. The first is subcutaneous fat. It is the layer of fat just beneath the skin that prevents us from being able to see the abdominal muscles, you know, those killer six pack abs that everyone wants, especially bodybuilders. The second type is visceral fat, which is beneath the muscles and surrounds the organs. Too much of either type of fat increases our risk for many serious health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke, just to name a few. This gives us additional incentive to lose the belly fat. There are no tricks, gimmicks or quick fixes to do this. Remember, you really can’t spot reduce fat in just one area of your body, it must be reduced all over your body at the same time.

To lose the fat and keep it off, you must eat a well-balanced diet filled with healthy foods such as highly nutritious fruits and vegetables and keep a consistent exercise schedule. Combining strength training and cardio workouts will help you do this faster than by diet alone. When trying to eat healthier, grocery shopping can become more complex until you get used to the idea that the answer to the question can vegetables burn stomach fat is yes, but again this is only indirectly.

You will have to shift your grocery buying habits from purchasing the packaged foods you may be used to, to shopping in the produce section of your local grocery store. Also, many town and cities are becoming more aware of how nutrition effects people’s health and several specialty produce stores are opening all the time. So be aware of the new grocery stores and health markets opening in your neck of the woods on a consistent basis. Learning which foods contain phytonutrients can help boost your metabolism and encourage fat loss. This contributes to an increase in the amount of weight you can lose in a shorter period of time.
