Do you know what kind of fish you are buying at the grocery store and your favorite restaurant? While many consider fish as a healthy alternative to chicken or red meat, some kinds of fish can contain high levels of PCB’s and mercury. That’s the consequences of living in a world filled with chemicals, but there are some kids of fish that are much more safer than others.

Farm raised fish was supposed to be the solution to the oceans and rivers being over fished, but the problem is that this is the most unhealthy fish you can buy today. That’s because most of these kind of fish are swimming in their own waste products their entire lives. The trick is to eat wild fish whenever you can, but there are also fish that even in the wild contain high levels of mercury.

Read on to find out what the most toxic fish are…

Salads are healthy, correct? Well, yes they are, that is unless you put tons of salad dressing on them. In fact, you don’t even have to put tons of dressing on your healthy salad to turn it into a nutrition disaster, you just have to put the wrong kind of dressing on it. So what is the worst kind of salad dressing on the market today? It’s simple, that would be store bought salad dressing.

Not every salad dressing you find in any store is bad for you, but unless you carefully read the labels and shop at a good healthy grocery store, you won’t find anything healthy about the dressings you find on the shelves there. The problem is that they contain highly processed soybean oil or canola oil. What, you didn’t know about canola oil? Sorry to break it to you, it’s not all that great either.

What’s the solution then to the unhealthy store bought salad dressing dilemma? Make your own!

What would you think if I told you there are 3 so-called healthy type foods that you should almost completely stop eating? You may be shocked to find out that these 3 foods make up almost 67% of what the American diet consists of. That means YOU are probably eating way to much of these foods and they may be having an adverse effect on your effort to get your weight under control.

Guess where those 67% of our caloric intake comes from if you live in the United States. The 3 foods are, are you ready, wheat, corn and soy and their byproducts. Pretty crazy isn’t it? Yes, they may be considered healthy foods, but the fact is, in today’s world, we eat a staggering amount of these 3 staples compared to what humans have eaten throughout history. Want to take a guess at how much wheat, corn and soy we used to eat?

In our effort to be healthier and lose body fat, many of us have started grabbing meal replacement shakes or nutrition bars to help us stay away from the vending machine and drive thru windows at the local fast food restaurant. However, have you ever read the ingredients of those so-called healthy energy bars? Many health and protein bars are actually more like candy bars than a healthy snack.

You can’t read the front of the package to tell the difference in these bars because they want you to think they are actually good for you, you’ll need to read the list of ingredients on the label. Skip the beautiful natural looking farms and natural looking ingredients on the front of the label and read the back to see what kind of junk these food manufacturers are really putting in them. Once you know what to look for, you’ll see that most of them are not even remotely nutritious or even good for you.

In addition to containing a lot of sugar and artificial sweeteners and probably some kind of chemical preservative, they don’t taste good and often have an unpleasant after-taste. Ingredients are listed from highest to lowest content. If the first ingredients include corn syrup, sugar, or hydrogenated oils and end with artificial colors, flavors and sweeteners, they are no better for you than the candy bars in the machines or down the candy aisle in the grocery store. The more processed the ingredients are, the fewer health benefits they contain. Simple is best.

Healthy energy bars taste better and provides the vitamins and minerals you thought you were getting from the other bars. Many of the best health bars have just a few ingredients. Read more about these kind of bar in an upcoming post.

For many people, eating out is a big part of their everyday lives. It can be one of the most common contributors to weight gain, especially for those who travel and have to et out frequently. The average restaurant meal contains nearly 1000 calories. That will definitely sabotage any kind of healthy eating plan. There’s no need to despair, however. There are plenty of ways to find healthy restaurant meals.

The first thing to do is skip the appetizer portion of the menu. The offerings here are often fried and covered with some kind of heavy, fat filled sauce. Some actually have as many calories as many entrée on the menu. Also, If you are having several courses to your meal, make sure you eat your salad because it is likely the most nutritious thing on the menu.

It will help fill you up and save on the overall fat and calories in the meal. Ask for the dressing on the side and for the cheese and croutons to be left off. Most restaurants have balsamic vinegar and olive oil as a dressing option. This will be the least detrimental to your eating plan. When ordering healthy restaurant meals, avoid any entree that is described as breaded or fried. Instead, focus on the menu offerings that are grilled or broiled. This also significantly decreases fat and calories. If it comes with a sauce, choose one that is tomato based, not cheese or cream based. The sauce is also something that you can ask for on the side.

The standard portions on most restaurant menus are usually much more than we would normally have on our own. French fries and potato chips account for a lot of the fat in a meal because they are prepared by deep frying and the portions are usually huge. Bypass the refined starches and ask for a double serving of steamed or grilled vegetables instead. This will help the meal stay balanced and still fill you up. Instead of soda or cocktails, opt for unsweetened ice tea or water. This can reduce the overall caloric intake by hundreds of calories.

Most restaurants serve very large portions of food. It may be two or three times what you would normally put on your plate. Don’t try to finish everything. You will eat more than you need to and destroy the efforts you made the rest of the day. Ask for a to-go box and put half of the portion on your plate directly there. It helps prevent overeating and you will have plenty for a full meal the next day. Healthy restaurant meals are not impossible to find, but they may require that you pay more attention to what is on the menu than you are used to.

We know that to lose weight and become healthier, we are supposed to eat right and exercise. What some people don’t know is how to get started. With the plethora of fad diets and healthy eating tips available, where should we begin? A good place to begin is with nutrient dense foods.

There are some foods that have been defined as superfoods. The term refers to foods rich in phytonutrients. They are compounds found in fruits and vegetables that become active when released into the body. Broccoli, blueberries, garlic and tomatoes all fit into this category of foods. It answers the question that thousands have asked. Can vegetables burn stomach fat? The immediate answer is no, not really. In truth, nothing will burn stomach fat, but many vegetables do promote fat burning because they give your body the nutrients it needs and that in turn helps you get rid of the excess fat your body may be storing.

Most natural foods we eat are treated with chemicals, such as herbicides and pesticides. Some common household cleaners also have these chemicals. The affect they have on our bodies has many characteristics. One of which is an increase in fat and more fat all over your body means more fat on your belly. The chemicals, called xenoestrogens stimulate hormones that cause our bodies to hold on to this fat, making it more difficult to lose. In addition to the superfoods listed, cruciferous vegetables as well as different types of teas and spices also have high levels of phytonutrients that can help our bodies counteract the effect of xenoestrogens. Eating more broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage can actually help you lose stomach fat in an indirect way.

There are two types of fat that we carry in our abdominal area. The first is subcutaneous fat. It is the layer of fat just beneath the skin that prevents us from being able to see the abdominal muscles, you know, those killer six pack abs that everyone wants, especially bodybuilders. The second type is visceral fat, which is beneath the muscles and surrounds the organs. Too much of either type of fat increases our risk for many serious health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke, just to name a few. This gives us additional incentive to lose the belly fat. There are no tricks, gimmicks or quick fixes to do this. Remember, you really can’t spot reduce fat in just one area of your body, it must be reduced all over your body at the same time.

To lose the fat and keep it off, you must eat a well-balanced diet filled with healthy foods such as highly nutritious fruits and vegetables and keep a consistent exercise schedule. Combining strength training and cardio workouts will help you do this faster than by diet alone. When trying to eat healthier, grocery shopping can become more complex until you get used to the idea that the answer to the question can vegetables burn stomach fat is yes, but again this is only indirectly.

You will have to shift your grocery buying habits from purchasing the packaged foods you may be used to, to shopping in the produce section of your local grocery store. Also, many town and cities are becoming more aware of how nutrition effects people’s health and several specialty produce stores are opening all the time. So be aware of the new grocery stores and health markets opening in your neck of the woods on a consistent basis. Learning which foods contain phytonutrients can help boost your metabolism and encourage fat loss. This contributes to an increase in the amount of weight you can lose in a shorter period of time.

Check out some of our diet plans that can help you lose weight and stomach fat.

If you didn’t know it, Healthy Food on a Budget is a nutrition blog that is run by a registered dietician that lives in Boston. The site is approved by the Boston Public Health Commission, and serves to offer people ways to eat healthy on a budget, demystifying the rumor that healthy food is expensive. It does not have to be expensive and we will explore some of the many ways you can still eat healthy and do it in an inexpensive manner in this article.

There are a couple of ways to look at the expense of food. Healthy food can seem to be more expensive than regular food when you are buying lots of produce and buying some organic foods as well. The bottom line is that when you eat healthier, in general you will be healthier and it will also help your lifestyle in the long run. When you get up into old age or maybe even while you are young, giving your body the right nutrition will help you stay healthier much later in life and you may avoid the exceptionally high cost of medical bills that seem to hit many people as they age. Yes, you may spend more on food at this stage of the game, but later in life you may possibly save thousands on medical bills because you took care of yourself when it counted.

And of course the second way to look at eating healthy on a budget is that you can find lots of healthy foods that aren’t that expensive yet still taste good and that will also give you the nutrition that your body needs. Yes, organic food is expensive, but there are many other choices that are quite inexpensive, yet still are healthy alternatives to the packaged and processed junk that tries to pass for food. Remember, just because the labeling says it is mother tested and kid approved, doesn’t mean that it is healthy. Besides, lines like that usually have no basis in reality and are simply marketing gimmicks to get you to buy a specific product. Labeling and fancy slogans can be printed on cereal boxes in just a few hours and the next shipment out of the factory may have great healthy keywords display boldly on the front of your cereal without anything ever changing inside the box.

On the Healthy Food On A Budget blog you will find grilling recipes, baked foods, desserts, and more, proving that anyone can make healthy, delicious food without having to spend a lot of money. The blog is complete with pictures and descriptions of the food plus the exact recipes that are sure to make anyone’s mouth water no matter what they’re looking for. There really is something on the site for every one.

The blog was developed by Kathy, a member of the Boston Public Health Commission, as part of the Mayor’s Food & Fuel Campaign. It offers economical solutions for healthy eating to help address the rising costs of food and fuel. When we eat produce and foods from other countries that has to be shipped to various places in the United States, that costs the environment a lot of resources, especially in added fuel consumption. So it is always better to buy local foods and produce if you can.

It doesn’t have to be expensive to be healthy, and that is the main point that is reiterated throughout the blog. There are savings tips, coupons and specials, information on specific recipes, and other tools that can help anyone or any family save money on their grocery bill and still be able to eat a healthy meal when they want it, which should be as often as possible. What is really expensive for a lot of people is eating fast food. You typical fast food meal combo is somewhere between $5 and $6 today and when you add that up for a family of 5 that can cost around $30 for a single meal at a cheap restaurant for food that isn’t healthy at all. And $30 a day for 1 meal out can add up to $210 a week if you eat out every day which some families do. That $210 for the week can go a long way towards healthy food that can be prepared in your own kitchen. That’s where Healthy Food On A Budget comes in.

Kathy monitors and maintains the site, and encourages communication from visitors and among the reading community that visits the blog. There are plenty of informational articles about the CDC, reading food labels, what the Boston Public Health Commission does, and other helpful resources to help people learn more about what’s going on with this city’s plan to address the rising costs of food and how to eat a healthy diet. With Healthy Food on a Budget, even people outside of the Boston area can get great tips on food, recipes, and how to save more money without sacrificing healthy food.

Healthy Food on a Budget is one of thousands of blogs about healthy lifestyles, but one of the few that focuses on an economic solution to healthy living. So many of the plans, programs, and websites that you see trap you into thinking that if you want good food you have to pay for it. And some blogs focus of expensive or luxury foods that only a few can afford. However, if you take the time to check out this blog, it’s easy to see how anyone with a willingness to try something new can save money and eat great all the time.

If you’re looking for meat and potatoes or coupons to junky fast food pizza restaurants or delivery pizza on this blog, you won’t find much here except for the healthy alternatives mentioned earlier in this article. However, if you’re looking for fresh, healthy food and tips on saving money on it, this blog is a quality read for you and your whole family.

Healthy food can get you a long way towards your weight loss and dieting goals, but if you are looking for a specific weight loss program, we suggest the FBF Diet Plan also known as the Fat Burning Furnace.

Joel Fuhrman, M.D. authored the book Eat To Live, which includes a proven plan for shedding a lot of weight really fast and keeping it off. The biggest part of the program is about finding density of nutrients and calories rather than just counting them. Broccoli, for example, has fewer calories in a pound than a pound of spaghetti would. Health= nutrients/calories is the basic formula for this program, and basically states that when you have more nutrients, you have lower calories, and fat melts away much easier than it might have otherwise.

Eat to Live talks about eating food that is dense with nutrients rather than focusing on foods that are dense with calories. That way, you can enjoy a low-calorie meal that is still satisfying because you can eat as much as you want in most cases. Losing this weight will help you to stay full longer, crave less junk food, and even help with diabetes and heart disease by putting your body back on a healthy track.

The plan lasts for six weeks, but the creator promises that you’ll lose 30 pounds in 3 months without ever being hungry. Considering that over-processed and unhealthy foods are what cause Americans to have the second-highest cancer and heart disease rates, eating better can really save your life.

Eat to Live is designed to make your overall life better, give you more time to enjoy life, and teach you a new way of living where you only eat what you need to live, instead of living from one meal to the next like many people do. The book offers tips and information about healthy eating that people are sure to love, and Dr. Fuhrman even claims that you won’t have to worry about heart attacks, blood pressure, or sugar problems after you’ve started eating this diet because of how absolutely healthy it is for your body. For those who have medical conditions due to their weight, this can be a dream come true. However, some people might not see success in this area, because their disease is unrelated to their weight, but much of what we put into our bodies does in fact either help us or hurt us in relation to our health.

Eat to Live suggests that it will open your eyes to a new way of thinking and better understand food and how your body works. You will find this book among the hundreds of other diet books and programs out there, but this one focuses on the right stuff. It’s not about convenient pre-fab meal plans and it’s not about just losing weight right now. It’s about you, and losing weight for life with this program.

A detox diet is any diet that serves the purpose of cleansing your body of toxins and making you healthier overall. There is no actual diet plan to follow. In reality, there are hundreds of different detox programs out there designed to provide you with the cleansing (and perhaps weight loss) that you want or need. In the past, these diets were promoted only as cleansing agents.

Today, however, celebrities have helped to exploit them as great fast weight loss plans, letting every woman fit into her dream wedding dress and every man look a little less bloated for the weekend at the beach. Previously, colon health was sort of a hush-hush topic. Today, more people are talking about the effectiveness of colon cleansing to increase health, clean out toxins, and make a healthier person of anyone who does it.

Detox diet plans are not recommended for weight loss by any medical professional, but chiropractors do recommend them. For people starting a new diet plan or healthy lifestyle, it can be a good starting point to get all the toxins out of the body and give the motivation to succeed because weight loss does happen. However, the 10-20 pounds that you’ll lose on these diets is secondary to the fact that you’re cleansing your body of all the disgusting things that have built up over the years of your life. Processed foods and fast food drive thru service has turned people’s insides into a breeding ground for toxins.

Come back tomorrow when we talk more about exactly what a detox diet is and how easy it can be to go on one.
